Hurrah for the champion returned!
It was a bright and sharp early start at South Fistral yesterday morning. The carparking cost over £5 for the day (shame on you, Newquay) and there were only two entrants in the Women's British Kneeboarding Championship, but it was still a day to remember.
At 10.00 start time, the tide was high and waves 5-6 foot and boingy beyond belief. Scumkitten was placed in the first men's championship heat with 3 guys (as you'd expect in a men's championship) and having spent 10 minutes NOT getting out back, decided to turn and take one of the 2 foot reform waves. What she didn't realise was that all the hooting and hollering on the beach meant that that wave put her in the lead of the men's heat for 10 minutes... ahead of the eventual winner of the International section. And, much to her shame, if she had managed to get a second wave (which she didn't, because she was feeling sea sick- never put a kitten on a kneeboard!), she would've gone through to the next round....
Anyway...
Here's a picture of Jodie Troth, the defending Women's Champion, taking one of the biggest waves of the day.
Click on the thumbnail for a big ol' shot.
We won't mention that she took the drop, then exploded into a mass of spray!
Big up to Jodie for retaining the title... If only Scumkitten hadn't got washed into the rocks and had to spend 15 minutes extrecating herself, she'd've given you a run for your money...
I still got a tropy though!!!
p.s. no photo of me on my wave, because DJ Mikey was too busy whooping and cheering and couldn't believe what he was seeing.
I have some notoriety now!
p.p.s. Just to put some perspective on the picture above- when Jodie hit the bottom turn it would've been triple overhead for her- probably double over head for a standup surfer, which is a big wave (obviously not a Hawaiian or Californian monster, but still...). If you look at the right of the picture, at the lip of the wave coming down, remember that one square metre of water weighs one tonne....
