Some idiot has come up with a 'formula' for the perfect arse
Boing boing points to an article in a recent copy of The Sunday Times where some psychology lecturer has devised a 'formula' that describes the "ideal female arse (I CANNOT type ass - it makes me think of a donkey) in shape, bounce, firmness and symmetry." So a woman's arse shape can be assessed for perfection against, or with the aid of a formula..... how convenient. Women can be shaped, modelled and redesigned to match a formula. Have aread of the article and tell us what YOU think. Pseudoscience.

There's similar such research applied to men's body shape, if you're interested (our "perfect" hip to waist ratio is 0.85).
The way this "research" is described, it sounds as though it's just describing the one guy's preferences for the opposite sex (Is he related to Benny Hill?). Then again, I wouldn't dismiss all research that describes "ideal" body types. The hip-to-waist ratio stuff seems to have a lot going for it.
If it's annoying that the *physical* aspects of attraction depend then seemingly arbitrary distances and ratios then I'll agree with you, but that's the human condition, not the fault of scientists who find it out.

Well I'm not sure how much this 'science' contributes to the already overwhelming pressure from society to conform to all sorts of 'ideals' most of which are unachievable by the vast majority of normal women. What annoys me about 'research' like this, is that once received into popular culture, those ideals of beauty are reinforced and validated by pop/pap 'scientific research'.
