Wasting food, how not to...

As part of the 'we're going to either pay of our mortgage in two and a half years, or, if we don't get a renewal in contract, bugger off to New Zealand' megasave, I've been tasked with sorting out our food expenditure.

Interestingly, we seem to be bang on with the zeitguist, as suddenly the Times is doing stuff on 'how to run a pantry', write shopping lists and not throw away so much food, as is the Waitrose magazine. I've also discovered the lovefoodhatewaste website which is great for looking at if you have a small number of ingredients and have no idea what to do with them without giving up and going out and buying a Chinese Takeaway.

We're doing well on the 'not throwing stuff away' at the moment, although me being up country for the last five days did throw DJ Mikey into a bit of a spin, despite having soup, lamb casserole, home made bread, eggs, cheese and left over chilli available to him. He didn't eat the cabbage. The cabbage had to go in the bin when I got home. He was sad about that, so hopefully has learned something from it... the lesson is, if I've left you a casserole, eat the cabbage with it ;)

Thanks for the lovefoodhatewaste link.
A couple months back I started doing "Veg on the Verge of Muntiny" soups, to help friends & family use up their (in need of guidance) vegetables.
About every other week I give a call out to see if anyone (in the 3-5 small households of family & friends) has anything to contribute soupwise.
I throw it together in the morning & by that evening the contributors have a couple quarts of soup (& if time permits) a fresh loaf of bread.

I should add that I do like to cook/feed people & have the luxury of having 2 stoves in my workplace.

...and find it really amusing to get random e-mails from soup people that state "I have chicken breasts!"

I love the name of your soups! It sounds like a great idea. We have soup a lot for lunch- most recent, pea, lettuce and lemon. We've always got peas in the fridge, had a lettuce that needed eating up, AND half a lemon... et voila! Bet your family and friends love you :)
