Ben's stripey scarf
My cousin's little boy asked me recently at a family get together if I would knit him a red and blue scarf. How could I resist a five year old asking for handknits?

Knitted using two balls of Patons Diploma Gold superwash DK, which is usefully able to be tumble dried. I used shades 6139 and 6169, lovely rich deep red (Cherry) and a slatey blue (Airforce). I cast on 38 stitches and used a 1x1 rib on 5.5mm needles for the whole scarf, making for very neat colour changes. I broke into the second ball of each colour to make some opulent fringing, which I hope he is going to love! My mother suggested going up a few needle sizes to what the ball band suggested, both to make knitting ribbed stripes go faster, and also to make the fabric more floppy. Worked a treat! She was right in that a 1x1 rib fabric on the suggested needles would have made a stiffer fabric which would have not been scarf like at all.
Finished dimensions: 4.5 inches wide x 58 inches (excluding a 4 inch fringe each end). Which should be perfect for a five year old.
Quite good illness knitting. No concentration required.
