RIP Steven 'Seething' Wells aka Swells and Susan Williams (amongst others)

I saw the death of this genius who inhabited all the publications of my formative years on Attila The Stockbroker's Facebook page. Go and read his fitting tribute which is published online for 3AM magazine. It is moving and apt.

He had battled cancer and in his regular column for the Philadelphia Weekly (where he had relocated) wrote:

I put the phone down and let out a huge, self-pitying 'Why me?' The answer, of course, is the same as the answer to Travis' shit-awful 1999 international breakthrough hit, 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' Because you're a fucking dick. Now shut the fuck up and grow a pair.

Genius.

RIP David Carradine

Strangely, we were listening to the 'Kung Fu' theme tune just the other day. Farewell David Carradine, you were much loved by the world, and, I might add, you MADE Kill Bill for me.

RIP Lux Interior

The Cramps meant a lot to me during my undergraduate days. We loved The Cramps. We used to dance to them every Thursday night at the Mayfair (sadly gone now). They were a fantastic live band. And appealed to me immensely because of their camp, kitsch, schlock-horror fetishy style, great stage attitude, and 60s garage psychobilly music. I am playing Cramps music all day today. Actually I am surprised Lux made it to 62....

Tuung, Comments of the Inner Chorus

I'm databasing at the moment (not as exciting as it sounds) and Pandora is keeping me sane. In particular, Woodcat, by Tuung. The sun is shining here and spring is being quite forceful, with warm air and strong breezes. The lyrics to this song just seem to match the mood of the day, and are making me feel quite... sensitive

Woodcat oh once a girl but not since the incident
Lives in the darkness making friends with the animals
Eyes burning yellow I miss your sweet kisses
I miss having coffee in bed watching TV
The ghost of an image it's just fleeting glimpses
You're there then you're gone through the roots and the nettles
I miss your hard edges I miss your bone marrow
I miss having coffee in bed watching TV

Piney Gir

Piney Gir, Peakahokahoo

DJ Mikey's latest musical purchase is rather fantastic and I wish to share. Piney Gir, an american washed up in London (and I don't mean washed up in a bad way), makes squeaky, fun and bizarre music, bringing in electronica, punk, swing and country along the way. I'm looking forward to trying her latest album, The Piney Gir Country Roadshow, which is apparently fully country. Hoe Down, Ladies!

Store Bought Bones from Broken Boy Soldiers is a fabulous pastiche, homage or whatever you want to say, of loads of great bands, I can hear shades of about 70% of my rock collection in that track. Including The Doors. It rocks.

Doozer knitting song from Fraggle Rock

Thanks to Purlpower for reminding me about this knitting song by the Doozers from Fraggle Rock.

Edited to add: This song came from The Great Radish Famine episide 19 of Fraggle Rock, in season 1, and the lyrics to the song are:

It's neat and it's sweet.
It's a ding dong treat,
Knittin' socks for little feet.
Just sittin' with your knittin' all day long.

You know, knittin's friendly,
And knittin's fun.
Knittin's good for everyone,
And that is why we sing this knittin' song.

Well it's knit one purl two.
What's a Doozer gonna do,
With a gol-darn,
Ball of yarn?
It's stitch three drop four.
Pitch that knittin' out the door right now.

There's a green, there's a red.
There's a knot in my thread.
A knitter needs his noggin read,
So don't come 'round and speak to me of yarn.

You can k-nit all day and k-nothin' fits.
'Cause only k-nitwits like to k-nit,
And k-nittin' k-needles just ain't worth a darn.

Well it's knit one purl two.
What's a Doozer gonna do,
With a gol-darn,
Ball of yarn?
It's stitch three drop four.
Pitch that knittin' out the door right now.

Ms. John Soda

msjohnsoda_140.jpg

Robots are people too

The Ms. John Soda Album "Notes and the Like" is pretty much permanently on our CD player at the moment. Their website has a few videos etc. and you can hear some of their tunes. Good if you liked Dubstar married to weird German electronica overlayed with a hint of Miss Kitten...

Edited to add the following from DJ Mikey: Btw your blog entry re miss john soda – to be absolutely pedantic it's - Miss Kittin (apparently her real name is Caroline Herve) although when she did the album with Felix Da Housecat the album was called Kittenz and Thee Glitz. Very confusing and not at all correctly spelled (or is it spelt?).
